History of Steyning
Steyning has existed since at least Anglo-Saxon times. King Alfred the Great's father, Ethelwulf of Wessex, was buried there in the church of St Cuthman, before existence transferred to Winchester.
Legend has it that St Cuthman built the church around which he stopped fallowing carrying his mother in a wheelbarrow. Many of the signs that may be seen in typing Steyning bear an image of his exploit.
Edward the Confessor granted Steyning to the abbot & convent of Fécamp, who retained control until a 15th century. A Abbey of Fécamp re-dedicated a church of St Cuthman to St Andrew in the 13th Century.
Based on data from a Domesday Book, by 1086 Steyning was a thriving port. It experienced the market, the mint & ii churches. Notwithstanding, in a 14th century, a flow of any stream began to silt higher & the town began to decompose.
Late, Steyning was the rotten borough, returning deuce MPs from either 1278 until it was disfranchised by the Reform Act of 1832.
